Leesburg, VA (June 26, 2024) – The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has issued a drought warning advisory for Northern Virginia and the Shenandoah regions, including Leesburg.
Though there are no voluntary or mandatory water restrictions currently in place, residents and business owners are encouraged to use water wisely. The following tips can help conserve water during this period:
- Check for leaks: Inspect faucets, toilets, and hoses for leaks and repair them promptly.
- Minimize outdoor watering: Over-irrigating grass is unnecessary as it’s normal for grass to go dormant in hot, dry weather.
- Turn off the water: When brushing your teeth or shaving, turn off the water to save several gallons.
- Run full loads: Use the washing machine and dishwasher only when full to maximize water efficiency.
- Shorten showers: Consider taking shorter showers or filling the bathtub with less water.
Should conditions worsen, voluntary or mandatory water use restrictions may be implemented. The Town’s Department of Utilities is collaborating closely with regional utility partners and government agencies to monitor the situation and respond as needed under the Potomac River drought response plan.
Currently, the Potomac River, Leesburg’s primary water source, is lower than normal but has not reached a declared drought stage, according to the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB).
