A large air-supported structure over tennis courts at Ida Lee Park collapsed Sunday afternoon around 2 p.m., according to Town of Leesburg staff. Fortunately, no one was inside at the time, and there were no injuries to staff or the public.
The collapse appears to have been caused by a significant tear in the bubble’s plastic membrane. The damage allowed air to escape from the pressurized structure, leading to its sudden failure. The bubble, which was installed in 2022 over three outdoor tennis courts, is one of two at the Ida Lee Tennis Center.
Town staff are now working with the bubble’s manufacturer to figure out a repair plan. In the meantime, the facility will remain closed through Monday, January 26, while crews assess the condition of the second bubble.
No word yet on when classes or court reservations might resume. Updates will be posted as the situation develops.
Officials are asking the public to stay clear of the damaged bubble area for safety reasons.
