LEESBURG, Va. — The skies over Leesburg will get considerably busier later this month as the annual Leesburg Airshow returns to Leesburg Executive Airport on Saturday, Sept. 26.
The free event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the airport, located at 1001 Sycolin Road SE. It will feature aerobatic performances along with displays of antique and modern airplanes and helicopters.
For Loudoun residents, the airshow is also a chance to get a closer look at an airport that has become an increasingly visible part of the Leesburg area as development has spread along the Sycolin Road corridor.
The Northern Virginia Radio Control Club will start the flying demonstrations at 11:30 a.m. with radio-controlled airplanes and jets.
The main aerial performances begin at 1 p.m. Scheduled performers include the Flying Circus, Bob “Rooster” Schmidle, Scott Francis, RJ Gritter, Aarron Deliu, Warbird Thunder and Jersey Jerks.
Organizers caution that the lineup could change. Aerobatic performances depend on weather conditions and may be modified or canceled for safety. Severe storms or other unsafe conditions could also force cancellation of the airshow.
There will be plenty happening on the ground as well. Visitors can check out aviation exhibits and educational activities, along with inflatable slides for children. Food and beverage vendors will be on site, and craft beer will be available for purchase.
Admission is free, but getting there requires some planning.
There will be no public parking or passenger drop-offs at Leesburg Executive Airport during the event. Instead, satellite parking will be available at Heritage High School, 520 Evergreen Mills Road, and Segra Field, 42095 Loudoun United Drive. Free shuttles will operate continuously between those locations and the airshow from 10:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Wheelchair-accessible parking and shuttles will be available at both satellite lots.
Visitors can also park at the Leesburg Park and Ride, but there will be no shuttle from that location, meaning attendees will have to walk to the event.
Those using Uber, Lyft or another rideshare service will have a designated pickup and drop-off area at 41951 Gourley Transit Drive. The location is about one-third of a mile from the airshow’s south entrance.
With much of the event taking place outdoors, organizers are encouraging visitors to bring cold water, sunscreen, hats and umbrellas. Pets, tents, wheeled coolers and outside alcohol are prohibited.
