Art Meets History in Leesburg’s Latest Public Art Initiative: Design a Mural for the Premium Outlets

wall at Leesburg Premium Outlets

In an exciting development for local artists and art enthusiasts, the Town of Leesburg has announced a call for design submissions for a new mural to be installed at the Leesburg Premium Outlets. This artistic endeavor aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area while celebrating the unique lifestyle and history of Leesburg.

Spanning approximately 15.5 feet in length and 10.5 feet in height, the mural’s design is expected to reflect the vibrant local lifestyle of Leesburg, with a strong preference for designs that incorporate historical elements and offer opportunities for interactive experiences, such as selfie spots. This initiative is open to artists and artist teams across the Washington, D.C. metro region, encouraging both seasoned and emerging talents to contribute, regardless of their previous public art experience.

Submissions will undergo a careful review process by the Commission on Public Art (COPA) and the property owner in March, with the Leesburg Town Council making the final decision on the artwork and its location. The selected artist will then proceed to install the mural upon entering a legal agreement with the Town of Leesburg.

The deadline for submission is March 1, with potential candidates encouraged to email their designs to Leah Kosin at lkosin@leesburgva.gov or mail them to the Town of Leesburg’s Commission on Public Art. Further details and submission guidelines can be found on the Town’s website.

This call for mural designs follows the Town Council’s approval in July 2021 of a pilot program allowing the creation of murals on certain private commercial properties. An ad-hoc committee evaluated the program, leading to its official launch in March 2022, following a positive report highlighting the program’s beneficial impact on the community.
