LEESBURG, VA — May 16, 2025 — A Thursday afternoon in Leesburg turned frightening when a child riding a scooter was hit by a car near 22 Plaza Street NE. The driver, a 63-year-old Ashburn man, was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence.
According to the Leesburg Police Department, the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. An officer nearby saw the child fall into the street and immediately stopped to help. Witnesses told police that the child had just been hit by a vehicle.
The child, whose name has not been released, had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Fortunately, the injuries aren’t believed to be life-threatening.
The driver, Victor Canchola of Ashburn, stayed at the scene and was detained. Officers determined he had been drinking and arrested him for DWI. Police also found out that his license was suspended.
Not long after the arrest, Canchola suffered a medical emergency and was taken to the hospital.
The charges so far include driving while intoxicated and driving on a suspended license.
This isn’t the kind of incident anyone wants to see in a community like ours. It’s a reminder of how fast a quiet afternoon can turn dangerous—and how quickly officers have to respond.
Leesburg Police say the investigation is ongoing.
