LEESBURG — A deadly fire late Wednesday night has sparked an intense investigation by both fire officials and Leesburg police.
Just after 11:30 p.m. on May 28, emergency crews were called to the 200 block of West Market Street after reports of a car on fire next to a home. The vehicle, fully engulfed in flames, was parked in the driveway of a single-family home, and there were early concerns that people might be trapped inside.
Firefighters from stations across western Loudoun — Leesburg, Hamilton, Lansdowne, Purcellville, and Lucketts — rushed to the scene. When they arrived, the fire had already spread from the car to the second floor of the house.
Crews got to work quickly: some attacked the car fire, while others searched the home. Tragically, they found an adult man deceased inside the vehicle. No one else was found inside the home, and police later located the second resident of the house unharmed nearby.
Now, the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating how the fire started, while Leesburg Police are handling the death investigation. As of this morning, the identity of the deceased has not been released, pending family notification.
This part of Market Street — with its older homes and tight driveways — can pose unique challenges for emergency responders. Local residents were understandably shaken, and many watched from their porches as flames lit up the night sky.
We’ll update as soon as more details are released.
