LEESBURG, Va. — A man accused of trying to steal a vehicle in a Leesburg parking lot Saturday afternoon is facing multiple charges after police say he assaulted the vehicle’s owner and attempted to flee the scene.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on May 16 in the 100 block of Crosstrail Boulevard SE, an area lined with businesses and subject to heavy weekend traffic.

According to the Leesburg Police Department, the victim was walking toward his vehicle when he spotted a man inside the car allegedly attempting to steal it. When the victim confronted the suspect, police say the suspect assaulted him before running from the area on foot.

Officers responding to the call quickly located the suspect nearby and took him into custody without further incident.

Police identified the suspect as Sean Doran, 33, who authorities said has no fixed address.

Doran has been charged with attempted grand larceny, possession of burglarious tools, destruction of property, assault, and providing false identification to law enforcement.

Investigators have not released additional details about how the suspect allegedly entered the vehicle or what tools were recovered during the arrest.

Doran was transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, where he is currently being held without bond.

The incident rattled some nearby shoppers and workers in the busy commercial corridor, which sees steady traffic throughout the day. While vehicle break-ins and theft attempts are not uncommon in rapidly growing parts of Loudoun County, police say quick reporting from victims and witnesses often plays a key role in making arrests.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Leesburg Police Department at 703-771-4500.
