Leesburg, VA – The Leesburg Town Council has unanimously approved the creation of an Auxiliary Police Officer (APO) program, a volunteer initiative aimed at bolstering public safety and enhancing community involvement.
The program, spearheaded by the Leesburg Police Department, will focus on tasks such as traffic control, assisting with events, and providing extra support during emergencies. It’s part of a broader effort to strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the community.
“We are grateful to the Town Council for their unanimous support of this important initiative,” said Chief Thea Pirnat. “This program will allow community members to play an active role in supporting our department, and we look forward to working alongside these dedicated volunteers.”
To ensure quality and safety, APO applicants will undergo a rigorous process that includes background checks and specialized training. While APOs won’t have law enforcement authority like arrest or detention powers, they’ll wear clearly marked “Auxiliary” uniforms and drive designated vehicles to distinguish their roles.
Initially, applications will be open to retired or fully certified former Virginia law enforcement officers and those already certified through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). Plans are in motion to expand the program to broader community involvement soon.
With the details being finalized, the Leesburg Police Department anticipates opening the application process shortly.
This new program represents Leesburg’s ongoing commitment to fostering a safe and welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
