Leesburg Walking Tour Brings Revolutionary War Stories to Life

Leesburg, VA – History buffs and curious locals alike will have a chance to explore Leesburg’s role in the American Revolution on Saturday, March 15, at 10 a.m. Local historian Rich Gillespie will lead a walking tour titled “Leesburg, Loudoun, and the American Revolution.”

Back in the 1770s, Loudoun was still a relatively new county, established in 1757. It was considered part of the “Southern Back Country,” attracting settlers from Pennsylvania as well as Virginia’s Tidewater region. The tour will offer insight into how the Revolution unfolded in the area, set against the backdrop of Leesburg’s well-preserved historic landscape.

The two-hour tour starts at the Thomas Balch Library parking lot. Only 50 spots are available, so pre-registration is required. Sign up by calling 703-737-7195, emailing balchlib@leesburgva.gov, or registering online. If you miss this one, don’t worry—the tour will be offered again in the fall.

Gillespie, a longtime Loudoun history teacher and Historian Emeritus for the Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area, brings deep knowledge and storytelling to the experience. Participants are encouraged to wear good walking shoes, dress warmly, and bring water.
